The Cigar Smokers’ Society was founded in St. Petersburg, Russia, on 10 October, 2002 by Elmar K. Greif, General Manager of the Grand Hotel Europe, St. Petersburg; Jack R. Melkonian, Dominican cigar manufacturer; and Arsen Gasparian, Founder and Publisher of hecho a mano, a Russian cigar/lifestyle magazine.
The Society is a the pioneer cigar club in Russia reviving the forgotten traditions and the exalted style of parlour culture. The Society is headquartered in one of the oldest and finest sites of St. Petersburg, the Grand Hotel Europe. The purpose of the Society is to encourage a strong bond among true cigar connoisseurs, and those who enjoy the finer things of life; and to revive and develop the cigar smoking culture in Russia.
Events held by the Society include tastings and evaluating the finest handmade cigars available on the world market; inviting speakers, renowned for their knowledge of cigars and other subjects that may be of significant interest to the Society and its members; hosting food and wine tastings; and holding special culturally enriching events with invited cigar-friendly celebrities. Members of the Society enjoy privileges at the Grand Hotel Europe any time of the year; a discount of fifty percent on all events held by the Society; a discount of twenty percent on all beverages procured at the Grand Hotel Europe restaurants, bars and cafés; a discount of ten percent on all cigars purchased at the hotel; and special room rates for accommodations at the hotel. Application for Membership shall be submitted in writing to the Secretary by a Member of the Society acting as sponsor for a new candidate. The candidate’s application shall be accompanied by a short autobiographical description focusing on his or her interests in cigars, food, arts, sports and travel. The sponsor shall have known the applicant for at least one year and shall attest to the applicant’s upstanding character and interest in the Soociety’s activities. The Secretary shall present the request for Membership to the Founding Members for discussion, and, upon being approved by all three Founders, Membership shall be conferred on the applicant.
